When I explained that I need to use my phone for business, I was told to keep the Mint Mobile SIM in the phone instead. I couldn't get any practical information and there is no mechanism on Mint Mobile's website to check the status of the activation! No email confirmation or anything. All I get is generic responses that are clearly copy/pasted and reviewed by lawyers to cover their butts.
I contact customer service using the chat feature on the website. This is where my customer service frustration comes in: I am in the middle of purchasing a house, so having access to my phone for business purposes is essential! I waited impatiently for the port (Mint Mobile's site says it can take 24 hours, but I refused to believe that such a process can take so long). This time, Mint Mobile's website acted like the process was underway. I asked the primary account holder again and was given another pin to try. At first, the system rejected my information saying the pin was incorrect. I thought I had the correct transfer information (account #, pin #, etc), so I went through the process on Mint's website. My experience porting the number was a bit of a headache and it is mostly user error, but also frustrating because of Mint Mobile's customer service. This was another important requirement for me: the ability to keep my number. I ported my number that I've had for almost 15 years. In general though, I find it to be a robust network with good coverage. My experience with T-Mobile's network is satisfactory, but your mileage might vary coming from another major carrier. I chose Mint Mobile because they use T-Mobile's network and I wouldn't have to buy a new phone. This process took less than 24 hours for me to see the unlocked status. Prior to this, I called T-Mobile and requested my phone (iPhone 6s) be unlocked.

I bought the 3 month trial from their website and it arrived promptly. I am making every sincere effort possible to reduce my spending and through lots of research concluded Mint Mobile is my best option. I've been on my family's T-Mobile plan for several years, paying in about $30 for my portion of the bill. I want to put this into writing so that other people can make informed decisions based on my experience.
